GOLFERS PLAY FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Nearly 96 players enjoyed a relaxing day of golf at Kambaku on Saturday, knowing they're enjoying themselves while also contributing to a worthy cause - cleaning up their own town.

Most of the holes were sponsored and so was the most expensive, or rather, important ingredient on the dinner menu - the meat. South African Braai-day was enthusiastically supported, which was heart-warming news to committee member Pierre Pretorius, who spent most of his day in front of the fire.

A cash bar was available and whether you were a tired golfer or simply a conscientious resident, a cold refreshment and sunset at the river created an ideal backdrop for easing into the evening. Melany Eva, manager of Kambaku, spoiled patrons by presenting them with trays filled with delicious ‘matshontshas’ (a Shangaan word meaning taste). Most of Komatipoort’s businesses supported this day and chairman of the clean-up committee, Eddy Ferreira, made special mention of this and thanked the many Mozambican companies that also contributed generously. One of Sali du Preez's sought-after, indigenous wood tables might also be up for sale, as another contribution to the project. Non-golfers also showed their support by buying tickets for the dinner and joining the festive atmosphere. People helped themselves at the buffet, and quite a few went for seconds where dessert, chocolate mousse and cream, was served.

The popular band, the Spillage People provided the music and started off with favourites from the ‘60s and ‘70s, to which couples could show off a few "old" moves on the dance floor. Of the four-ball golf, Des Hillary, Lindsay Robertson, Ronelle Putter and Amanda Basson won with 96 points. Eddie Ferreira, Francois du Plessis, Colin Steytler, and Cobus Leuvennink came second with 87 points and Jeanette and Piet Maritz, Piet van Dyk and Jakkals Steyn were in third place with 86 points. Further results are: fourth: Lukas and Ester Britz, Antoni Fritz and Richard O' Farell (85), fifth: Kevin and Clyde Nott, Nico Engels and Salidoor du Preez (85), sixth: Roelf Fritz, Henk Mostert, Chris Basson en Cas Botha (83). Nearest to the pin were Tiaan Viljoen (5 and 14) and Ronelle Putter (8 and 17) and Magda Stronkhorst had the longest drive - to which the men could only humbly applaud... What makes this clean-up remarkable, is the abundant and unconditional support the townsfolk gave one another. This was aptly reiterated in the words of a female golfer who said, "We have a stunning dorp!"
